APPENDIX PAINT AND VARNISH USED AT FORTS LARNED, HAYS, AND DODGE IN THE PERIOD 1867-79 Paint 1. White lead - used at Fort Larned in 1867, 1873, and 1875 for painting exterior wood on all buildings; used at Fort Dodge in 1870, 1874, 1876, and 1879; used at Fort Hays in 1870, 1872, 1873, 1874, and 1878. 2. Zinc white - used at Fort Larned in 1875. 3. Paris white - used in the Fort Hays officers' quarters in 1872. 4. Paris green - used at Fort Larned in 1873 to paint shutters. 5. Chrome green - used at Fort Hays in two lieutenants' quarters in 1870. 6. Emerald green - used in the Fort Hays officers' quarters in 1873 and 1874. 7. Marseilles green (ground in oil) - used in the Fort Dodge officers' quarters in 1879. 8. Ultramarine (deep blue) - used at Fort Larned in 1875. 9. Yellow ochre - used at Fort Larned in 1875. 10. Chrome yellow (ground in oil) - used at Fort Larned in 1867 and 1875. 11. Raw sienna (yellowish-brown pigment) - used at Fort Hays in 1872. 12. Vermilion - used at Fort Larned n 1875. 13. Venetian red - used in the Fort Hays officers' quarters in 1873 and 1874. 14. Drop black (ground) - used in the Fort Hays officers' quarters in 1873 and 1878 for repainting doors. 15. Burnt umber (ground in oil) - used at Fort Larned for staining in 1873 and Fort Dodge officers' quarters in 1878. 16. Raw umber - used in the Fort Hays officers' quarters in 1873 and 1874. Varnish 1. Dewar varnish - used at Fort Larned in 1875. 2. Japan varnish - used at Fort Hays in 1870 and 1878; at Fort Dodge in 1874, 1876, and 1879. 3. Copal varnish - used in the Fort Larned officers' quarters in 1873; at Fort Dodge in 1879. 4. White varnish - used at Fort Hays in 1872, 1873, and 1874 on interior work of the officers' quarters. Turpentine and linseed oil were used to thin the paint at all three posts.
