3. Adolph Hunnius, Diary, Aug. 26, 1867, Kansas State Historical Society. James Sheire in his report states that the Fort Larned commanding officer's quarters was similar to the drawing of the commanding officer's quarters at Fort Lyon, Colorado. He derived his theory from the fact that the United States Army Engineer drawings' index in the Cartographic Division of the National Archives listed an architectural plan for the commanding officer's quarters at Fort Lyon. While the index identified the drawing as that of Fort Lyon, there was no indication on the drawing itself to support the index label. In fact, written descriptions of the Fort Lyon commanding officer's quarters do not match the purported index label.
