V. PRESERVATION ALTERNATIVES AND IMPACT ANALYSIS

Preparation of the alternatives and the impact analysis for the Patowmack Canal was accomplished by the Williamsport Preservation Training Center, Denver Service Center, and the Planning Section, Eastern Team, Falls Church Office, Denver Service Center. The plan was completed in May 1985. (Appendix H). As a follow-up to that document, the George Washington Memorial Parkway along with the National Capital Region developed a Memorandum of Decision which forms the base of a preferred alternative. The Regional Director concurred with this decision on February 19, 1986 (Appendix G).

In order to expand on the Memorandum of Decision paper, a more detailed program was developed to aid management in the operation and development of this resource. This program outlines specific work areas that require attention for the preservation of the canal.

A general recommendations section is also provided to help park management develop some interim strategies for monitoring, interpreting, and preserving the resource until the necessary funding is made available.
