CHAPTER 4:
THE WIEN CONSOLIDATED AND WEIN AIR ALASKA CONCESSIONS
Brooks Camp
Fig 20. This aerial photo of Brooks Camp, looking southeast, was taken about 1970. The buildings on the left comprised the NPS residence and maintenance complex; those in the center comprise the concessioner's camp. Note the sandspit at the mouth of Brooks River and the embayment seen on the north shore; both were lost by floods and dockwork during the late 1970s.

Brooks Camp Lodge
Fig 21. Brooks Camp Lodge, completed in 1961, is shown in this August 1968 photo; the manager's office is shown at the extreme right. The lush ground cover, seen in the foreground, was worn away during the 1970s and 1980s. (Ward Wells Collection, AMHA)

Brooks Camp cabins
Fig 22. Brooks Camp cabins 24 through 27, looking northwest to Dumpling Mountain, 1971. Brooks River is to the left of the photograph. (Ward Wells Collection, AMHA)

Skytel
Fig 23. The eight-unit Skytel, opened in 1965 at Brooks Camp, featured spacious rooms with double bunk beds. Shown in the photo is Carol Petersen, wife of camp manager Chuck Petersen and daughter-in-law of the camp's founder. (Frank Whaley photo, Wien Collection, AMHA)

John Walatka and Raphael Kupanoak
Fig 24. Kulik Camp's sawmill and planing mill, installed in 1956, supplied materials for the camp's lodge, store and garage, and also provided the lumber for the Nonvianuk Camp lodge. In this photograph, taken in 1960, John Walatka and Raphael Kupanoak are seen operating the mill's crosscut saw, used for firewood and similar purposes. (Ward Wells Collection, AMHA)

Kulik Lodge
Fig 25. Kulik Lodge was completed in the late 1950s. Here a group of fishermen are seen relaxing on the porch shortly after completion of the lodge. The view is to the southeast. (Wien Collection, AMHA)

Kulik Camp lodge
Fig 26. A group of guests seated around the fireplace in the newly-completed Kulik Camp lodge, 1960. (Ward Wells Collection, AMHA)

Kulik Camp
Fig 27. In the late 1950s Kulik Camp, seen from the southeast, consisted of the recently-completed lodge and a smattering of tent frames covered with asphalt shingling. During those days the aviation docking facility was located on the eastern shore of Nonvianuk Lake. A Cessna T-50 is shown at the dock. (Wien Collection, AMHA)

Kulik Camp
Fig 28. By 1960 Kulik Camp sported a log office building and garage as well as a lodge, all constructed from the camp's sawmill. This view, from a hill southwest of the camp, shows the Kulik River behind the camp and a slight embayment where the present airplane dock is located. (Ward Wells Collection, AMHA)

lodge guests
Fig 29. This group of guests, taken during the 1960s, includes camp manager Chuck Petersen (at top right) and NCA publicist Jim Chadwick (front row, center). The combination manager's quarters and lounge, constructed in 1957, was the first Panabode structure erected at Grosvenor Camp. (Wien Collection, AMHA)
