Historic Events

1851Mariposa Battalion discovered Yosemite Valley from Inspiration Point.
1855J. M. Hutchings organized first party of sightseers to enter Valley.
1856"Lower Hotel," first permanent structure, built at base of Sentinel Rock.
1858Cedar Cottage built.
1864Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Big Trees set aside as park by Congress, to be administered by State of California.
1868John Muir made his first trip to area.
1871Conway started work on Four-Mile Trail to Glacier Point. Finished in 1872.
1874Coulterville Road built to Valley floor. Big Oak Flat route completed to Valley.
1875Wawona Road constructed to floor of Valley.
1876Sentinel Hotel built.
1881Tunnel cut through Wawona Tree.
1882Tioga Road constructed. Conway built Glacier Point Road.
1890Yosemite National Park, surrounding Yosemite Valley, created October 1.
1891Capt. Wood, first superintendent, arrived with Federal troops to administer park, May 17.
1899Camp Curry established.
1900Holmes brothers of San Jose drove first automobile into Yosemite.
1906Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove receded to United States.
1913Automobiles admitted to Yosemite Valley.
1914Civilian employees replaced military in administration of park.
1919First airplane landed in Valley, May 27, Lt. J. S. Krull, pilot.
1926All-Year Highway completed and dedicated July 31.
