APPENDIX D: CERAMIC RECORDING PECOS ARCHEOLOGICAL SURVEY Component# (1 num): Use component number as assigned on the main site form. Recorder (3 char): Enter initials of person(s) doing the ceramic analysis Date (7 - date): Recording date by day, first 3 letters of month, last two digits of year (10JUN93). Total Time (2 fields 2 num ea): Total time it took for ceramic analysis, enter hours:minutes (2:30). This is analysis only. NOTE: During the initial stages of the survey, we will want to know how much time we take to set up and collect the grids and/or samples - write this time down in parenthesis next to total time (only one analyst needs to do this). Cer. Dates (4 fields 5 char ea): Ceramic dates determined as a result of the analysis (can enter two sets if applicable). Confidence (1 char): Confidence in the date indicated by the ceramic analysis. 1 LowFeature sampled (5 char): The type and number of the refuse scatter that was sampled (e.g. 83-01). Sample# (2 num): The number of the sample area. The sample areas will be numbered sequentially per refuse scatter (i.e., 83-01 might have two samples: 01 and 02; and 80-03 might have one sample: 01). Sample Type (1 num) 1 Lithic and ceramicDimensions (2 num fields - 4 digits w/1 decimal ea. - 000.0 x 000.0): dimensions of the sampled area, length x width to the nearest tenth of a meter. If sample consists of multiple grid units show number of units in parenthesis followed by the dimensions of the individual units; e.g., (5) 2 x 2m. Pickup (3 num): Total number of artifacts picked up in the sample collection. Analyzed (3 num): Total number of artifacts analyzed from sample. Do not include diagnostics or other sherds of interest that might have been looked at outside the sample area. Assemblage Summary (200 char): Briefly summarize ceramic assemblage - consider discussing types, date determination, diagnostics, spatial distribution, general observations. TYPE INVENTORY Group# (2 num): This is filled in for you - the number serves as an identifier for all subsequent analysis. Types (Char - 3): Ceramic typology
Form (Char - 2): Vessel shapes/form
Count (4 num): Number of sherds in the group Weight (4 num): Weight of the group to nearest tenth of a gram Rims (4 num): Record the number of rim sherds in the group (also fill out the 'Rim Sherd Inventory"). Vessel (2 num): Vessel count - in the course of the inventory, individual vessels may be distinguishable (mostly in the case of decorated wares). Follow number entry with "A" (for actual) if you know, or can project with confidence, the number of vessels represented. Use "M" if you can only provide an estimate of the number of vessels. When the time constraints and the number and nature of the sherds in the sample prevent you from coming up with an actual vessel count without additional work use "M". Comments (Chars - 200): Note any interesting features/characteristics of the sherd group, presence of worked sherds. Can use to show diagnostics and associated dates that led to your ceramic date assignment. RIM SHERD INVENTORY The rim sherd inventory is designed to gather information that can be used to project vessel size and function. Document only those sherds that can provide a confident measure of vessel rim diameter (see "Diameter" discussion below) Group # (2 char): Enter the Group # under which this rim sherd was counted on page 1. Record each measurable rim sherd individually unless you are certain they are from the same vessel. Diameter (2 num): Project interior diameter of vessel rim in cm using the handy dandy measuring chart - match the arc of the rim sherd with the arcs illustrated on the rim chart (if a rim diameter falls between two illustrated rim sizes, you can enter the intermediary value; e.g., if the rim sherd falls between 44cm and 48cm as shown on the chart, you can "round" your entry to 46). Only enter rim diameter if the rim sherd(s) allows you to project vessel size with confidence - if the arc of the rim fits with one, or at most two, of the possible diameters shown on the chart. Do not inventory rims that can be made to fit more than two possible diameters. # of sherds (2 num): This will be 1 unless you have grouped multiple rim sherds from the same rim (again, only group them if you are certain they are from the same vessel). % of rim (3 num): Estimate percent of rim represented by the sherd(s) using the handy dandy measuring chart. If you have grouped rims from the same vessel together, make sure the percentage entered reflects their total representation of the rim Comments (200 char): as necessary.
