Historic Events

1604Mount Desert Island discovered and named by Samuel de Champlain, September 5.
1688Island granted to Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac by Louis XIV.
1762Island given by Massachusetts to Sir Francis Bernard, Governor of Massachusetts; later, eastern half granted to M. and Mme. de Gregoire, western half to John Bernard.
1855First "summer visitors" recorded as vacationing on Mount Desert Island.
1868Steamboat service from Boston begun.
1888Scenic railway built from shore of Eagle Lake to summit of Cadillac Mountain.
1901Charter granted to Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations to acquire and hold in public interest land on Mount Desert Island.
1908First gift of land to trustees; donated by Mrs. Eliza Homans of Boston.
19145,000 acres of land on island tendered to Government as a national park by Hancock County Trustees.
1916Tract accepted by Government; proclaimed by President Wilson to be the Sieur de Monts National Monument.
1919Act of Congress, February 26, created Lafayette National Park, first national park east of the Mississippi River.
1927Jordan Pond Road opened to travel.
1929Park name changed to Acadia; Schoodic Peninsula added to park.
1931Cadillac Mountain Summit Road completed.
1935Schoodic Peninsula and Wonsqueak Harbor Roads completed. Schoodic Naval Radio Station completed and commissioned.
