Historic Events

1773Capt. James Cook, Royal British Navy, landed on Island of Kauai.
1792-3-4Hawaii visited by Capt. George Vancouver, Royal British Navy.
1794Archibald Menzies, botanist, and party of Vancouver expedition made first successful ascent of Mauna Loa.
1823Kilauea visited and explored for first time by Rev. William Ellis and party.
1825Kilauea visited and mapped by party under Lord George Byron.
1838Lake of molten lava in Kilauea named Halemaumau by Count Strzelecki.
1840-41Expedition under Capt. John Wilkes, U. S. Navy, explored and mapped Kilauea and Mauna Loa.
1856Erection of first "Volcano House" hotel at Kilauea, a grass house.
1912Hawaiian Volcano Observatory established.
1916Aug. 1, Hawaii National Park established by act of Congress.
1933Airplanes used for first time to carry visitors to witness eruption of Mauna Loa.
1934President Roosevelt visited the park. First American President to visit park while in office.
1935Feb. 23, dedication of the Haleakala Road.
1935-36Important scientific bombing experiment successfully carried out by Army Air Corps during eruption from northeast rift of Mauna Loa.
1940Mauna Los erupted April 7 in summit crater, Mokuaweoweo.
