Description:US Marine charges forward on Okinawa. A US Marine charges through Japanese machine gun fire on Okinawa, main Ryukyu island, 375 miles from Japan. Marines and infantrymen of the US 10th Army controlled three quarters of Okinawa three weeks after landing on the island March 31, 1945. By May 28, Americans were breaking through the enemys southern defense line anchored in Naha, the capital. Major General Fred C. Wallace, commander of Okinawa Island, has announced that the Okinawa Island group will be developed into the most powerful base in the history of warfare, including many new airfields from which US bombers can sow destruction upon every industrial target in the Japanese held territory.
