JULY 3GENERAL LEE'S INTENTIONS
General Lee had wanted to renew his attacks on July 3 by coordinating
that on Culp's Hill with another by Longstreet and Hill against the
Union forces on Cemetery Ridge. He believed that "with the proper
concert of action" and with the advantages gained from the ground taken
on his right and on Culp's Hill, he could attack with success on July 3.
Longstreet's Corps, including Pickett's division, would assail
the Union left in the morning as Ewell assaulted Culp's Hill. But
Longstreet and Hill were not ready to attack at daybreak, and the
Federals would not wait for Lee's generals to implement his plan.
