Great Smoky Mountains National Park, encompassing 800 square miles in the states of Tennessee and North Carolina, is one of the largest protected areas in the east and has been designated an International Biosphere Reserve. World renowned for the diversity of its plant and animal resources, the beauty of its ancient mountains, and its remnants of American pioneer culture, the park attracts nearly nine million visitors a year. The park road system provides access to the high mountain crest, to open coves dotted with pioneer homesteads, and to some of the finest scenery in the eastern states.
