ZION NATIONAL PARK
Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway near Checkerboard Mesa
Opened in 1930, the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway presented a formidable
challenge to provide easier vehicular access to Zion Canyon. A dramatic
series of switchbacks lined with random ashlar retaining walls lead down
to the Virgin River, offering spectacular views and scenery along the
way such as this geologic feature known as Checkerboard Mesa.11
